From June 1 2026, dogs travel free of charge. They need to be on a leash AND wear a muzzle.
Dogs are permitted to travel on public transport under certain conditions. As a general rule, all dogs, large and small, must be kept on a lead and wear a muzzle!
For small, harmless animals, Section 40 of the Conditions of Carriage for Public Transport Services (Kraftfahrlinien-Beförderungsbedingungen, Kfl-BefBed) applies. For larger dogs that do not fall under the ‘small, harmless animals’ provision (Section 40), muzzles and leads are compulsory! Transport is provided free of charge.
Dogs may be taken on public transport without the need for a leash and muzzle in the following cases:
- If the dog is carried in a closed container (caution: it is not allowed to carry the dog in an open handbag)
- Service dogs for people with a disability
- Guide and assistance dogs
