Taking bicycles on the train: There are now local trains with a dedicated bicycle compartment

Modern facilities, more space

The first new, modern Siemens Desiro ML local trains entered service with the 2022/2023 schedule change. The new trains run in Vorarlberg’s three-border region between Schruns and Lindau (DE), as well as from Bregenz and Dornbirn to St. Margrethen (CH).

The following plan (in German) shows where the bicycle compartment is located on the train:

Easily board and disembark with your bicycle

Modern local trains have been fitted with dedicated bicycle compartments for the first time in Austria (see video below, in German). Passengers board the train with their bicycle at one door, place the rear wheel of the bicycle into specially designed clamps and, once they have reached their destination, disembark with their bicycle using the other door. There is only one bicycle per fixing. This new system helps keep things easy to manage and reduces stress when disembarking.

Different configuration depending on the season

The new generation of local trains can be adapted to respond to the demands of the different seasons: The four-carriage trains are equipped with more seats and ski storage units during the winter, while in the summer the low-floor section of the middle carriage is converted into a bicycle compartment capable of holding up to 39 bicycles.
